World Series of Golf on CBS June 28 & 29

Posted in World Golf Tour News, Fun Stuff at 3:52 pm by alex

WGT is a proud sponsor of the 2008 World Series of Golf in Las Vegas, and a couple of us got to go and experience the fun. In case you are unfamiliar with the event, it’s an amateur-only tournament that has been described as “the texas hold ‘em of golf”. Players ante on each tee, and the player who wins all the money from the other players in his group advances to the next round.

The show will air on CBS June 28 & 29 from 2-3pm EST. Click here to check your local listings.

Here are some photos we took while we were there:

Motor Caddies

Posted in Equipment at 11:20 pm by alex

Golfers love new gadgets, and I’ve always been fascinated by the remote-controlled, robotic variety. Part of the fascination is that I don’t actually know anyone who owns one, so I have no first-hand experience of them. Golf bloggers and reviewers reliably fawn over them, though I doubt they own one themselves. But they must be selling well, because they are becoming ever more loaded with features, and even Segway has joined the fray and come out with their own version. Do you own one, and if so, does it live up to the hype?

Happy Father’s Day!

Posted in Fun Stuff at 9:00 am by alex

Today is Father’s Day, a holiday often associated with personalized ties, sentimental mugs, and large quantities of meat and beer. Personally, I don’t mind these clichés. Father’s Day is about getting together with family and celebrating fatherhood, and if kitsch and food bring families together, great. As for me, my dad is abroad so I won’t be able to celebrate with him, but the rest of the clan is getting together for a BBQ and some heavy drinking.

How are you celebrating Father’s Day?

Will We See You at Torrey Pines?

Posted in Pro-Golf News, Fun Stuff at 1:02 pm by alex

The U.S. Open is underway in San Diego, and a couple of WGT staffers will be there tomorrow through Sunday to take in the action. We will be decked out in WGT shirts and hats, and we’ll send a nice gift to anyone we meet wearing WGT apparel. Hint: you will likely find us hanging around the 18th green. Hope to see you there!

Golfing in the Arctic

Posted in Courses, Golf Travel at 6:32 pm by alex

Remember how fun it was when you got to stay up all night and watch movies as a kid? Well, now you can stay up all night and play golf at the Arctic Open in Akureyri, Iceland. At the world’s northernmost 18-hole course, where the sky is never completely dark during a few weeks in summer, it’s possible to have dinner and drinks until midnight before teeing off. Talk about earning some boasting rights. :)
