WhiteShadow Takes the Lead!

Posted in World Golf Tour News at 8:04 pm by rich

WhiteShadow carded an unreal 38.99 in the Charity Challenge! He’s the first one to beat Sammy! I would imagine that his palms were a little sweaty as he lined up his shot on #9. Great job WhiteShadow!!

Let’s see if anyone can take over the #1 spot from him…

WhiteShadow was kind enough to offer some tips to let everyone know how he plays the game. I think many of you will find these helpful.

WhiteShadow’s Top 5 Tips

1. Practice the Perfect Swing – there’s no penalty for whiffing. Let the green bar run through without clicking to help get your timing focused for the Perfect Swing.

2. Skip Holes, Restart and Take Notes – skip holes you’ve already mastered to work on others. Since you can’t “really” skip a hole, just swing quick without worrying about score and move on to the next hole. Take notes vigorously. Note the wind club, stance, spin, swing and shot quality – distance to the pin and perfect swing mark. Like whiffing, there’s no penalty for restarting. Use Restart to quickly exit a bad round when you’re shooting for the low score.

3. #4 – with the wind at 2 MPH left-to-right, position arrow to the left of the pin by about one pin-length while in green view, move ball up about half-a-tick mark in your stance, set full backspin and take a full swing with the 2 Hybrid. You should be within a few feet every time, if not a hole-in-one.

4. #7 – with any wind, use the PW, full backspin and ball all the way up in your stance. Depending on the right-to-left wind strength, position the arrow further and further right of the pin. For example 3MPH position in the middle of the fringe off to the right, 4MPH a little further and so on. You’d be surprised how far right you need to position the arrow for 6MPH. Take a full swing and don’t get worried when you hear a heartbeat.

5. Turn the sound off if you are at work!

That is BS. The game always finds a way to be inconsistent so there is no way you can shoot that low. Always has one hole where you aim left, wind pushed you left, you swing early and it still ends up going right….into the water. Makes no sense.

  4. ecuaump34 said,

    January 30, 2008 at 2:26 pm

And I am about ready to fly to Vegas and excavate the rocks on hole #2. That is rediculous. You hit a “perfect” swing and it hits the rock and lands in the water. BE CONSISTENT!

what does the 1PIN mean on top right of the screen? Help! Thanks

  7. rich said,

    January 30, 2008 at 3:16 pm

That is just a header telling you the distance you are from the pin. If it says 1Pin 73yds, it means you are 73 yards from the pin.

  8. WhiteShadow said,

ecuaump34, your 133 isn’t bad… How many times have you gone into #8 with a score in the 40’s or 50’s and end up shooting 20 yards from the pin? Believe me, it happened to me probably a good 50 times before I figured out the perfect shot for a 6MPH wind. I still have trouble with any other wind on that hole.

John, I can see why you think it’s impossible to shoot a low score when you’re stuck in the 1200’s. Are you the same John on the leaderboard with that 1,247.77? You might want to try going through the tutorial before you give up on shooting a low score. Get your score under 200 and I’ll give you a couple more tips.

If you are using the Beginner Series clubs (R7), click the “s” key on your keyboard and a stance control will come up on the screen. For those using the Pro Series clubs (R7 TP) the stance control automatically appears on the screen.

  15. WhiteShadow said,

    sawgrass,

I only use the pros. I was using the beginners for a while and couldn’t get under 100 if I remember correctly. But, using the beginners did help me get better at hitting the perfect swing with that green bar — its quite a bit slower.

Whiteshadow-my Golf name is Mayte not John. I am close to breaking 200,my best shot was 4feet from the hole on #2.I use beginner clubs-do Pro clubs really make a big difference?

  17. WhiteShadow said,

    January 30, 2008 at 6:27 pm

    Mayte,

I would use beginners until you can get really good at timing the Perfect Swing. The pro clubs allow a lot more control and much more backspin, but the green bar seems like it move twice as fast. Just like anything else, it just takes practice. Refer to my #1 tip for working on your swing timing.

Congrats Whiteshadow! I’ll never get that low, i’m still tring to break 100, 114 is my best so far, i’ve was at 45 going in to 8 the other night….then put it right in the left bunker! number 2 and number 8 mess me up alot. on 2 i have been aiming far left and then hitting the ball past the perfect mark and sliceing it within 25 feet a lot, but i know this can’t be the best way. also i still use the beginers clubs, those pro clubs go to fast for me. Also i think it was you that had a replay of a shot on number 3, look at my replays, i save almost that exact same shot!

  23. ecuaump34 said,

For #2 on the beginner clubs, put your backspin all the way to the bottom (full backswing). Use the 7 iron at full power and then aim just a touch to the right (if wind is blowing left) or a touch right if blowing to the left. Then try to hit the “perfect” swing and you should be anywhere from a hole in one to within 7 feet. Sometimes the game errors on a perfect swing and puts you in the water, but for the most part it will get you within 7 feet.

  24. ecuaump34 said,

    January 31, 2008 at 3:19 pm

John, 200 is easy to break. It is 100 that is impossible.

  25. Brandon said,

Foe hole number 2 Useing pro clubs. Take one club up, full backspin and just short of full power. Aim right of the flag between the fringe and hole and you are inside 10 yards.

  32. ecuaump34 said,

You can also move the ball up and or back in your stance to add or decrease loft.

  33. WhiteShadow said,

    February 1, 2008 at 11:57 am

I use the loft a lot… I’d rather find the right loft where I can always use full back swing… Using full back swing all the time helps keep my timing down for the perfect swing. For example, the advice for #2, above by ecuaump34 — I would move the ball up one tick-mark in my stance so I can pull the club all the back, but take some distance off it with the loft.

  34. ecuaump34 said,

    February 1, 2008 at 1:39 pm

That is with the pro club though as white shadow said. For the beginner, you don’t need to adjust the stance with those clubs. You full backswing and full backspin with the 7 and it will be right distance on #2.

    Guys,

I built a World Golf Tour Risk Analyzer in Excel.

    URL Download - http://www.webgio.com/wgt_risk_analyzer.zip (10 KB)

Step 1 - Enter your Goal
Step 2 - Enter your Average Distance from the Pin
Step 3 - Track your Actuals as you Play to get the Analytics around your game performance.

    * Based on your actuals the analyzer will give you the average distance you need for all holes moving forward to meet your goal.

    * If the average needed on the current hole is below your average distance (in step 2) then it will flag it YELLOW as a warning to make sure your bringing your A Game. If you have no chance in hell it will turn red and it means it’s time to RESTART.

Step 4 - Click RESET ACTUALS to start over.

    Most importantly have fun!

Oh and the last tip …. try not to get divorced or fired from your day time job! We already had two incidents on my team “TheFourPutters”.

Thats awesome! Been playing this silly game all month. Just shot personal best of 71.48. Here is a couple of more tips. Beginner clubs are erratic. Only good for developing a feel for the game. Back spin is crucial on a couple of holes, like #2 and #7. On hole two it is ridiculously hard to get close with out it. On seven just aim right and ride the wind, a lot of room for error with back up. Hole six I also use full back up and aim left. The more wind is blowing you have to aim further left. Eight is the toughest. If you have a six mph wind you can use a small amount of back up to get over the bunker. With a 9 mph wind you have to use full top spin and hope you skirt the bunker. Hole nine is also a lot easier with a fair amount of back up.

I saw someone above not believing WhiteShadow’s score. Probably like most people on here, I’ve been playing golf online, beginning with links in 97, for more than 10 years and nothing surprises me anymore. I was a little skeptical that someone could ever get that low but the fact is, ya can. It just takes a lot of work and a very steady hand ! You have to make all of the notes and charts, which I’ve never done or used in any of the golf games but I’ve never been #1 either. I finally broke 100 today. I had 60 on the last hole and shanked one on #9. I restart constantly so rarely make it to 8 and 9 which ends up killing me. Good luck everyone.

I believe the score is valid in the sense that the program believes that score was shot. However, after playing for quite sometime now, I do not believe it is attainable without the use of a mouse recording program.

  43. RUGE said,

    February 4, 2008 at 6:57 am

I agree about the mouse recording application. I can’t break 170 and when these guys are shooting 39 and 41 it makes you question quite a few things.

As a .NET web developer I think that the World Golf Tour should have 2 stats. One stat that is for those using the mouse and keyboard tracking program (and we activity track for use by using AJAX to record back what users are doing). The second stat is for those who are playing normal with no assistance.

My brother who was in the top 10 in the world in Tiger Woods 2006 has yet to break 119 tells me that some of these guys have some tricks that they aren’t revealing.

They should have a yearly shoot off in person to win the grand prize to see who has the steady hand and who is using the mouse and keyboard tracking program.

Caught Yah WhiteShadow! I challenge White Shadow to use a screen capture application like Camtasia Studio and record himself playing the game shooting under a 60 (not even a 39) and then posting it to YouTube.

My best is 125, but my “potential best” is 17.19. I obviously don’t use any software to play this game, but I’ve shot well enough on every hole to score very low. It is consistency that is difficult (just like the real thing: go figure).
    My bests for each hole are .24, 1.39, .39, 1.13, 3.24, .74, 1.64, 4.19 and 4.23, playing with beginner clubs.

Given the amount of time it must take to achieve this consistency, I’m not sure that being able to hit 38 is something of which to be proud…

This is for those who don’t believe whiteshadow’s score. Your wrong! I have shot a low score of 71.48 and if you take my low scores for each hole I would have a 5.79. I did this with out any cheats with about 5 weeks of practice. I have not taken any notes but there is only nine holes too figure out. After enough practice about 5 of the holes become pretty easy. It would not surprise me if someone breaks 20 before they roll out the full game.

Here are some tips on how you can improve your game:
use the space bar to zoom into the green to more accurately aim your shot.
while zoomed in, look at the green and see where it slopes
aiming for the flag is not always the best, let the ball roll to the hole
use the “s” key to control where the ball is placed in your stance
the further up the ball is to your front foot, more reverse spin and height is achieved
swinging 100% is not always your best bet, club up and take an easier swing
the less power you swing with the larger the sweet spot and easier it is to time the hit.
    avoid the water
Yes, your choice of clubs will drastically change the speed of the swing. The R7 Beginner clubs are much easier to hit (slower swing meter) but they are not quite as accurate as the R7 TP Pro Series clubs (fast swing meter). The Pro Series clubs also hit the ball further so you can hit your approach shots with higher lofted clubs.
The game will always be free.
The first hole is so easy because you are hitting a either an Approach Wedge or a Sand Wedge (depending on your clubset) and those are pretty forgiving clubs. The 2nd hole is much harder because it is longer…as is the 9th hole. I think if you add some backspin (using the the green dot on the ball next to the swing meter) you’ll find the 9th hole can be fairly easy.
Using the Pro Series, club up to a 7, hit space bar for green view, position green arrow on the flag’s shadow where the flag meets the pole, full back spin and forward one tick in your stance, 100% back swing — guaranteed within 5 feet any wind, every time… Play with the arrow positioning, backspin and stance, slighlty for variable winds to come even closer. Take notes, they come in handy.

    WildWing and WhiteShadow

Like I said above ….. record your screen using a screen capturing tool (Try CamStudio) its free and post your video to YouTube (Make sure you record your status bar too so we see all running apps ;-) . All I want to see is a 60 or below.

I would love to see a sponsored “In Person” tournament at the end of the season with all the winners from the year to see who is the real deal on consistency w/o using software like “Advanced Key and Mouse Recorder” or some other similar macro creation tool. Google it … it wouldn’t suprise me that they are using it hence Tip #2 so they can write the macro against various wind conditions and based on what wind condition shows they load the macro accordingly and just press play.

Bottom line the game is sweet, hats off to the developers and very addictive. I still can’t break 170 … but my friends and I are having a blast with our weekly league.

My apologies to WhiteShadow if he scored that low without computer automation assistance but I am still skeptical.

Our plan is to have “in-person” championship tournaments at the end of a season where we will provide the computer and mouse for each participant. Those will likely be “on location” at a golf course so some real golf can be enjoyed as well!

We are on the lookout for anyone using mouse recorders since we have access to the logs and shot data for every player.

  53. Brandon said,

Has anyone proven the mouse recording theory? Does that even work? Anyway, I think 30’s, 40’s is easily possible without that stuff. I’ve shot a best of 80.67 with the crappy clubs (inconsistent shot results on perfect snaps), no charts, no click recording program, no note taking, playing on my laptop touchpad by; just pure playing the game too much. Every night I watch TV and play the whole time and that’s what you have to do to score well. The game is pure repetition coupled with some luck. I guarantee since I’ve started playing I’ve had at least 20 holes in one (not sure if it recorded all of them because I often restart after a bad shot) so I know that this is possible.

I am about to take a rest!!!! I am so close to break 100,but I goof up on 2 holes to score over 200!!!! I have mastered #1,#9 to withih 3 feet, one hole 1foot,then I blow 2 holes to wreck my score. I think 50 can be broken using beginner clubs,I believe it. My poor holes have been result of poor swing. With time, practice, and most of all patience i can now target 50!!!!!With begineer clubs…..

I just Ace’d 3 after posting that above (didn’t count i restarted after tossing one in the bunker in #4). #8 kills me. I’ll shoot 90 but get like 30feet on #8. I need help on that hole. Problem is i never make it that far because i restart all of the time.

First off, congrats to Whiteshadow. That is a great score. I hope that its legit. But based on all this mouse recording stuff, I am beginning to think that maybe there is some doubt. I scored a 113 and can’t seem to get under that 100 mark. Its a tough game. My friends have fun with it as well, we are all very competitive and its just like in real golf. We try to beat each other up. Fun stuff.

I will continue to try and hope I can break 100.
    Very frustating though.

Has anyone played that golf course in real life? It looks awesome. Next time I am in Vegas, I am playing it for sure!

85 is my best score, no cheating mind you, and I too would like to see a really good round posted to YouTube, just to marvel at how they accomplish it.

A few of us play in the office and it’s interesting to swap ideas back and forth on the different shots. Here are some of my tips with beginner clubs:

#1 For scoring, use club it gives you and hit full backspin, full power. Move aim for wind obviously. For aces, try a rollup method: same club, no spin, no stance, and only powerup until the clubhead first goes in the trees.

2# Hate this hole. If wind = 3, I found you can go full back and miss one tick to the left of perfect, you’ll end up at 7 feet. Perfect=water. Mostly I just try to get lucky on #2 or I just restart.

3# PW, aim left for wind, one tick of backspin, no stance, full power. For aces: I try to rollup with same club, no spin, no stance, and the tinest bit off of power. I find the aces come when you aren’t backspinning, rather rolling in.

4# 3 wood, full backspin, bit of up stance, aim left and pray it doesn’t fly over the hole. Not my fav hole

5# same club, full backspin, no stance, aim left and hit a good one. you really need to aim for a spot near the bunker.

6# Easy method: moderate front spin, standard SW, aim left and no stance. My new trick for aces is to upclub to AW, no stance, no spin and hit it when the club is at 12 o’clock, but before the next one. Short shot, don’t let the wind trick you much on this one, it doesn’t seem to pull much.

7# Use the standard method of full backspin, aim right, no stance and let it rip. Will always come close, but like I said, aces don’t seem to drop for me. My new way (got me an ace in 3rd try) was more dangerous, but here goes: same club, no stance, no spin, use only 12 o’clock power (shaft is straight up). One hopped it directly in the hole with this method, don’t miss much trying this shot or you’ll be in the drink.

8# hate this hole, to be honest I don’t have a real plan except use front spin on 9 wind.

9# found a great new trick on this. Downclub to 7 iron, full backspin, just below half up stance, and don’t move the pin much. I PURPOSELY miss on the right, seems to take that stupid left bounce out of it. You need to land it JUST left of the bunker. I got an ace like this. If you don’t use up stance you’ll roll past the pin, same with spin. My ace came with 7 wind, didn’t move pin at all and missed significantly to the right. Love this new trick, seems to work brilliantly and you can miss big time. If you don’t miss, you’ll probably be 20 to the left, pin high.

The point is to study the game, you will get better! I thought my 134 was amazing, till I blasted through with an 85. I would love to hear some feedback if anyone tries my tips.

    “Has anyone aced a hole?”

Yes, John, I’ve had 5 or 6, but I think only 4 show up in my stats. During 2 rounds that I had one, I guess I got buck fever and screwed up some following holes pretty good and just quit. If you get a hole in one, finish your round, regardless, or the stats won’t reflect it.

On #2, try putting your marker a full pin length to the right and just draw the ball back into the green. Most people hit the ball to the center of the green and the best you can hope for is about 20 ft. Play the draw and you’ll be looking at some 2 to 4 ft. putts.

Congrats WhiteShadow, that was one helluva round.

Being from Missouri I’d agree with the fella above, I’ll have to see it to believe it. I am assuming when this “game” matures they will have it where we can play in groups at the same time then it will be a moot point.

What fasinates and frustrates me is the fact that I should have grown tired of the 9 holes weeks ago, but yet I fire this damn thing up every day to play a bit.

I mastered #9 finally!!! Only change I make is to not take a full swing-about 85% and I get within 6 feet now-no other changes-all with begineer clubs!Often I went off the green-bunker or water. Not now!!!!

#8 for me is tough! Often it kills my score!!! No changes other than master the swing stroke, pay attention to the wind direction…..

#2 is always tricky-again If I master the stroke, put in some backspin, and hit the mouse just before the green line I get within 5 feet!!!! But…..

    WhiteShadow,

You can try camtasia studio as well with a trial from TechSmith.

    http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp

I have the same issue as you with speed of my processor when playing the game with other apps running. If you don’t have the computing power then don’t worry about it. I understand.

The CamStudio app is kind of clunky so try going with the Camtasia Studio which isn’t free but they have trial version. If your going to buy screeen capturing software Camtasia Studio is by far one of the best.

I wonder if so many folks are leaving the game on 24/7 and leaving the volume turned off on the game so that they can get on anytime? You know, just minimizing the screen which they CAN do. After all it is their computer etc.??? Is there an “auto log off ” on the game for say 30 minutes of INactivity? I would guess that this game is going to be soooo popular in time that you’ll have to re vamp your system to accommodate all of us!! I love this game! We tried to get on for sandrakay on Super Bowl afternoon from 2 pm until 4:30 when the game started here in New Mexico and then it let us get on! When folks turned off the game to watch THE GAME! ha

I’m curious if anyone has Aced all 9 holes. Is it even possible? So far I’ve only conquered 1,2 & 6. Maybe this could be another challenge and would eliminate so many restarts. What holes have you guys aced?

  80. Jeff said,

I gotta tell you, I am very concerned about the realism, it just isn’t accurate enough.

For example, the water in front of the hole on #2 should have, per my estimate, 12,534 golf balls in it, enough so that I could bounce my shot off the surface and onto the green.

I know this, I put every one of them there…

    You have to fix this.

  81. Matt said,

    February 10, 2008 at 10:45 am

This game is totally addicting, but I think some changes need to be made for the future versions. Maybe being able to use the space bar to swing the club for more consistency or slowing the downswing bar slightly because the margin for error is kind of ridiculous. I’m sure that 19 of 20 tries I have to restart before I can make it to the 9th hole. My potential best is an 18.54 and I have 6 aces but my best score is still only 101.. its kind of maddening.

It would be really cool if you could save a game midround, and just start where you left off, on say the 4th or 8th hole instead of having to go thru the other holes over and over again..

Anyway, great game - just a few tweeks from being an awesome one..

    Cheers,
    Matt

I have started to play Tigers Woods #4 and Links LS-I like the challenge of playing very realistic courses and using all shots!!! I never press re-start on these for if I bogey a hole I can always par or birdie others.Shot making is more realistic on these, but with WGT there are too many bugs……I am sure the creators of WGT are studying the success of these and will incorporate many ideas!!!!It will be interesting to see how the aces out there will compete on 18 holes using ALL shots and Clubs.I shoot below 80 on some coures-even beat the Computer,so my scores on a FULL WGT course will be awesome!!!! Look out for me…..

I got frustrated at my failure to master the “perfect swing” and tried using a mouse recording program. I found that the results were not repeatable — the programmers must have put in a random time delay after you release the mouse button on the upswing before the swing starts, which makes it impossible to beat it with a mouse recorder. So I would trust the scores that people have put up.
So it’s back to practicing. I have gotten to 122 with the Pro clubs.

Tip on hole number #8 with pro clubs:

This tip applies only with the 9mph wind. Aim in the top left corner of the green and put full top spin on the ball. Swing full speed with the Hybrid and If hit perfect you will be within a couple feet.

Now somebody please hook me up with a tip when there is the 6pm wind speed on #8. Do you gotta tweak the stance a little bit? Spin on the ball? Where to aim? Thanks!

Sammy, Whiteshadow, and Pipbody….I would like to see some of your tips! Hole #9 possibly?

  90. bdrez said,

    February 14, 2008 at 8:53 pm

My tip for #9 is to club up to the 7 iron, full backspin, move stance to the notch that is halfway to the top, aim just left (unless wind is 7 MPH, then aim a little more left) and take a full swing. You should be inside 9 feet all the time. I’m still fighting with 4 and 8. I have good stuff for #2 if anyone’s interested as well. I’d like some help elsewhere. And does anyone need a teammate?

  91. ecuaump34 said,

    February 15, 2008 at 1:43 pm

I have a tip for #2 as well, get out a damn bulldozer and remove the friggin rocks!!!!! Or just have the programmers fix the bug that when you have a wind that blows left, you aim left and hit a perfect swing, yet the stupid ball still goes to the right. And why sometimes does a 2 MPH wind do nothing and other times it is like playing in Katrina!!!!!

I was googling a little for some world golf tour tips and came across http://www.wgtclub.com which appears to be the beginning of a forum for world golf tour addicts. There are a few useful tips already and they were easy to find since it’s sorted by hole instead of scanning this huge blog. Hope it helps some of you…

  93. Matt said,

    February 15, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Actually, with the wind blowing 6mph left to right on #8 I’ve found the easiest. (relatively speaking) Just aim a couple feet to the right of the left fringe, and put the spin about halfway down - you need to land slightly left of the pin, and slope will carry right towards the hole. (You can try moving it up in your slance just slightly) if you execute the swing properly, Ive gotten inside 3 feet. If you dont add the backspin, it lands too hard and rolls 30 feet past the hole.

#4 and #8 are particularly infuriating, because if you miss just slightly, you end up in the bunker or 40 feet away and have to restart!

    Cheers,
    Matt

  94. Matt said,

    February 16, 2008 at 1:25 pm

#2 is actually one of the easiest holes. The wind is always either 2 or 3mph. For 2mph, full backspin on 7iron, aim less than half a flagstick to the right of the hole (towards the water). For 3mph, full spin on 7iron, move the ball one tick up in your stance, aim slightly less than 1 full flagstick to the right and voila, your inside 4 feet everytime. Even if you are slightly right or left of the perfect swing, you’ll always be inside 10 feet.

I have taken a leave from WGT to hone my skills on Tiger Woods Golf and Links LS-I prefer 18 holes using ALL clubs and putting, therefore if you screw up a hole or two you have plenty of time for make up. Links LS is still better ,more realistic and much harder than TW Golf. The physics of Links Ls is just awesome….

My low score is 114 with the pro clubs and until I didnt know about backspin. I think I can now lower my score!!! #1 is prety easy to ace. I use the roll up method. I actually aced #2 once but I screwed the round up and quit before finishing. If I had known how difficult it was for everyone I would have finished the round just to preserve that Ace. #4 seems to be the most inconsistent hole with wind and with results. I can hit the same exact shot with the same wind and get different results. Of course #8 screws me everytime. Ive had luck lately taking a drastic approach on #8 by actually aiming right of the hole, dropping down to a 2 woods, hitting it at about 95% power and pray I pull the shot. This is the only way I can roll the ball straight towards the hole and not a roll that crosses the green. #9 infuriates me as well, but now that I know about backspin that should be a very easy shot. Great job Whiteshadow!

  104. Noah382 said,

Hole #2 is one of my better holes, I’ve aced it around 8 or so times.

At 3MPH wind, you put the mark directly left of the pin on the edge where the fringe and the green meet. Put the ball almost all the way up in your stance, but not at the top. And hit a full swing. With a perfect swing, this should bounce right at the pin and roll up to it.

Sometimes I can just tell when I hit the ball that it’s going to be a good one.

  106. rich said,

Mark, moving the little green dot in the middle of the golf ball icon next to the swing meter will add spin to the ball. Moving the dot down will add backspin and moving the dot up will add topspin.
