Tips for Hole #6
Hole #6 on the Charity Challenge is arguably the toughest to master on WGT. Luckily, many helpful WGT players have offered tips to make a decent shot. Below are a few of them, so try some out and let us know how they worked out!
Greggles
“The trick with no.6 is (if you use pro clubs, which you should) to put the ball at the front of your stance, with backspin halfway between the centre and the bottom, you then can either aim left at the hump and purposely fade it (if you aim left then you can totally slice it and it will be ok) onto the fringe and it rolls close, or you can leave the aim and fade it less (about half way between the “perfect shot” and the “push” line), as for power it’s about 1/2 cm from full…this is a risky shot but can be very good.”
Tibbets
“The trick to #6 is…..SWITCH TO PRO CLUBS! If you’re just starting to play this game, use beginner clubs for 2 weeks tops, then switch to Pro Clubs. If you’ve played hole #6 400 times already with Beginner clubs, you’re way overdue to switch. Trust me, you can’t get any decent scores with beginner clubs on this course, and small amount of time you invest in getting used to the faster speed will be worth it within a week, as you will get scores much lower than you ever would have gotten otherwise.”
TheCaptain
“The trick on #6 is to go after it. If you play it safe, the best you can do is ~17 feet. If you aim for the fringe, like on the old #2, it will sometimes hit and slow down and get you within 10 feet. But it’s an all-or-nothing shot, if you miss hit it, you’re probably in the water. I use the beginner clubs, full backspin, about 5 ticks less than full power on the 3-iron, and aim at the bump on the fringe. I think I have gotten under 10 feet about 3-5 times.”
iconian
“Closest I got was using 1 club short, max power, and hitting left of best shot, maybe 2mm? It hits fringe and rolls over hill and down. I got that shot maybe 4-5 times total out of 400?
Always inside 15ft.”
ptolemy
“Only way I am able to get inside 30 ft, is to use club short, max top spin, max power and hit left of the perfect by —>”

On Hole #6 I will use club given. Depending on Wind : 0 wind = full swing half bksp.1 wind = full swing 1 tick more spin. 2-3 wind= Half inch from Full swing and full backspin. 4-5 wind is tricky. About 1 inch to full swing and all back spin with moving the anchor about 2 inches left on screen. and….USE PRO CLUBS.The trick with this hole is you need to have a perfect swing but still, with a slight miss hit you can still be within 10 feet. Im within 5-6 feet consistently.
We need some love for Hole #3. That hole is killing my scores. Any help would be great.

#6 isn’t as tough as #3. That hole is ridiculous. If you don’t hit a perfect shot, it either goes in the trap on the left or rolls 35 feet past the hole!

I’ve actually aced #3, but you’re right, it’s a toughy. If I manage to stay out of the bunker I’m usually anywhere from 20 feet short to 20 feet long. Occasionally I get lucky and get within 10, almost always when there’s a 2mph wind.
As for 6, it’s just a crap shoot. Pro clubs are just out of the question. I’ve said it before - some of us no longer have the reflexes for that kind of speed. Ideally, the swing speed aspect of the pro clubs would be taken out in favor of requiring a much more accurate shot in terms of whether or not the ball is fading or pushing. Otherwise us old folks are just relegated to the back of the bus. -Rod-

I have a comment for the developers, assuming that look at this page. I would love to see a pause option; in other words, give me the opportunity to come back to the game at a later time but hold my place. I like to get in a few holes while at work during the day but I don’t always have time to complete a full 9.

Hi Justjac,
You will be able to save your game in our next release coming up in late summer.

tiger, #3 is fairly easy, i get inside 20ft about 7/10times with easy clubs
here is what i do: if wind 0-3 miles then i hit on the spot, if its 4-6 miles then just before best hit.
use default club, put spin all the way down, and dont max it out but leave about this much: –>

Hey USA Patriot, thanks for calling me out on a previous post about not breaking any records lately. I just took care of that pesky little detail this morning lol.
And Caven, I do appreciate your words of support towards me. You’re pretty darned good yourself man! Heck, I never thought anyone would end up with more holes-in-one than me, but you’re absoultely smokin’ me in that category! Well done!
45.87 is the new low. Good luck and happy hunting!

USA Patriot, reflexes are no excuse, I’m a 60 yr. old retire and do alright with the pro clubs. The hassle is when you switch it is not so much the speed as that is timing, it is setting up new spots and draw lengths, also different club choices at the same distances you are used to, but as many have said it is the way to go. I’m glad I switch in the previous challange.
Your welcome Tibbets, glad to see you went ahead. I’m from Michigan and seeing two Ohio people on top was hard to take, though both are pretty darn good.
Good luck all.

Tibbets,
I noticed that last night. Glad I could be of service. I think you got complacent or something
Caven,
It makes all the difference. If I can’t react fast enough then the shot is blown. I tried the pro clubs in the previous iteration of the game and dropped a few thousand spots in the standings over 4 or 5 days time before I gave it up at went back. Realistically that club head speed has no basis in reality. In the real world, if you take a full swing and I take a full swing, our club head speeds will not be alike. In addition, club head speed isn’t fully realized until after the ball has been struck. On the downswing, the club…especially the newer clubs…stores energy as the shaft flexes. That energy is not released when the ball is struck. The proof is in any photo. The shaft is still flexed. The energy stored is only released after the ball is gone and the shaft unflexes itself, making the pro club’s wild clubhead speed unnecessary to this game. -Rod-

USA Pat
I agree with your analysis, and I might add well thought out.
However, in this “game” when using pro clubs it is not reaction but timing. There are times when my timing is dead on, which is rare, I do not even have to look at the swing meter. Also the pro clubs allow a little “slop”, in other words you do not have to be dead on a perfect swing to hit a decent shot.
As I said, I’m retired and spend a lot of time on WGT, so I can experiment and adjust endlessly where you may not have the time.
What ever clubs you use, I wish you well and hope you are at the top of the leader board one day soon. You gave Tibbets a shot in the arm with your blog entry, now get on his tail where it counts.
Take care.
USAPatriot said,

But one’s timing depends on reaction time, yes? That time span between when the brain says it’s time to click the mouse and when your finger actually does so.
I’m only on top of my game about once a week. Most days I struggle, other days it all clicks…pun intended…and it’s just a matter of not making a stupid mistake on 6 or 8. I figure 110 with the beginner clubs isn’t bad.

USA,
As long as you’re having fun.
I noticed the player of the day yesterday was using beginner clubs, shot in the 60’s, it can be done.
Myself, all I try to do is break 100 everyday, I’m not in Tibbets or GentleB3’s league, but I have a blast with this exceptionally well programed game. I still find it amazing the real life variables they have incorporated into this game.
Good golf to you.

Talk about ripped off! On #3, .15″? It looks to be over the hole to me.

Hi USAPatriot,
Nice shot! Thanks for pointing this out–the alignment of the ball and cup is something we are working to improve.

Alex,
If you look at it from Camera 2’s angle, it appears the ball was an inch or two short though the official number was .15″
Grrrrrr.

Hey All,
#3 ,default club, full backswing, ball fully forward in stance, perfect hit
Winds 1 - aim right about 2 lengths of the pin
Winds 2 - aim right about 1 length of the pin
Winds 3 or 4 - aim dead on
Winds 5 - aim left about 1 length of the pin
Winds 6 - aim left about 2 lengths of the pin
power is the biggest factor here…
Winds 1 or 2 - about 1 club ‘movement’ less than full power
Winds 3 or 4 - half way between 1 and 2 club movements less than fp
Winds 5 or 6 - about 2 club movements less than full power
Play with these and let me know what you think, I can usually end up within 15′ and have a couple of Aces on this hole.
Oh and BTW 34.99 is the new mark to beat… I was on fire today

Oh and one other general tip I find helpful is to wait until in between bird chirps… I know it sounds wierd, but I always seem to hit late during those damn bird sounds! (Kinda like in real life LOL) I don’t know if it’s just me or my slow PC is chunking away on the sound and delays my click…. but I find it helps.

You know that I never even heard those birds until I’d been playing for about 2 months? Weird, huh? -Rod-

I don’t know about the saving option…..people will save their game after each hole and keep reverting to the saved game until they get another ace and move on….at least that’s what I’d do…
JKArts said,
June 3, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I just cant put a whole round together…..I’ve had 35 points coming into the 8th before….and managed to butcher that as well as 9. My best is 93 or so….but I can see the potential….
alex said,

Hi JKArts, we probably won’t allow the game to revert back to the beginning of the hole on which you last saved. So in a closest to the pin challenge, even if you click Save while the ball is mid-air, we would still remember the shot and calculate it as if it wasn’t interrupted.

Gee, all I had to do was play with my alter-ego golfer and easily broke the record on my second try today.
Yes, Tibbets and Myxolydian are the same.
#1 and #3 all time.
Aces on every hole(both this course and the last one).
Best average score of the top 50.
173 combined holes-in one.
Game. Set. Match.
Bring on the next course guys!

Congratulations Myxolydian alias Tibbets. I always enjoy seeing a great round.
I hope down the stretch you do not face another Noah382, but there are some out there who can break thirty, myself not included. Though the other week I had an 8 going into seven, needless to say all I got out of that round was a new mouse as my old one ended up on the wall, didn’t even finish the round.
Share with me how you have such great ball striking consistency. Do you time your swing? Do you react to a visual cue? Take me through how you do this.
Congrats again, as I once said a WGT God.

Thanks Caven.
As far as ball striking goes, I’m much the same as you: You’re either in the groove of it or you aren’t. Like you said in an earlier post, sometimes you don’t even have to look at the meter all that much to get good swings. It’s just a matter of feel. I’ve tried the whole visual cue thing, but in the end, just feeling my way through it seems to be the way I play best.
I’m sure lower scores can be had. I’ve had under 20 many times going into hole #8 (sounds like the last course huh). It’s such a fickle game at times…hard to put it all together for 9 holes. It should be interesting to see what the full version will be like. Personally I can’t wait to play it.
If my mouse weren’t so good for the other games I play, I’m sure it too would have ended up on the wall many times over lol. This game can be so frustrating, without a doubt.
caven said,
June 6, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Thanks for the reply Tibbets.
Yes indeed a fickle game, but extremely interesting.
Throwing the mouse was just for comedic relief, didn’t really do it, but like you being in the 20’s going into 8 or even 9 (which for some reason is my nemesis) I have picked it up but held back.
Good golf to you and I can’t wait for the full version also.

Hey guys.
Newly arrived to this game due to a tournament in denmark, where we are playing this game in the first round.
But i’m really struckling with some of the holes.
I would gladly accept any assistance and help that anyone of you could give me. Atm i’m playing with beginners clubs and my best so far is 149 pts. But i kinda need to improve more.
So any advice would be appreciated.
(cept for switching the pro clubs, because i seriously cant hit that swing bar
).
